Where the calories come from

Which calorie figure sets the portion?

The calculator uses 801 kcal for this neutered, moderately active adult. The 747–854 kcal working range is not the full spread of every method: WSAVA’s broader range on the scale is 724–991 kcal.

These are estimates using FEDIAF, AAHA and WSAVA formulas, not fixed requirements. The marked figure sets the grams. See how the calculation works, then weigh your dog monthly and adjust.

Use the marked calorie figure as a starting point, then adjust the portion as your dog’s weight changes.

What does the same dog cost?

For the same 801 kcal, Natures Menu Country Hunter 80% Chicken Nuggets is lowest at £3.91 a day; cooked Lily’s Kitchen Fresh Recipes Chicken with Quinoa is highest at £11.22. These estimates use one-time prices listed by the respective brands on 21 October 2026.

Both pack price and calorie density affect the gap. Lily’s Kitchen lists 94 kcal per 100 g; Natures Menu lists 133. The chart compares calorie-based portions; raw food prices calculated by body weight sit separately.

Compare the same daily calories, not just the pack price or grams.

Calories or 2–3%

Why does the percentage rule differ?

The 2–3% rule is what raw brands print, not a veterinary norm. It scales directly with body weight; calorie needs do not.

For the 5 kg adult, the calorie calculation gives 239 g of the example food, against 100–150 g by the rule. Small dogs need more food per kilogram. For larger active dogs, the difference depends on activity and the food’s calories; the working-dog example needs more.

A body-weight percentage and a calorie-based portion are different calculations, not interchangeable feeding targets.

Calories versus the 2–3% rule: Natures Menu Country Hunter 80% Chicken Nuggets (1,330 kcal/kg)
DogBy caloriesBy 2–3% of body weight
5 kg adult239 g100–150 g
15 kg adult602 g300–450 g
30 kg working dog1,566 g600–900 g

The rule is what raw brands print; it is not a veterinary norm. Small dogs need more food per pound than the rule gives, large active dogs less or more depending on calories.

Price after a quiz

The formula

How are grams and cost calculated?

  1. Resting energy

    534 kcal

    70 × 15.0 kg^0.75 (AAHA 2021)

  2. Daily calories

    801 kcal

FEDIAF row for activity; AAHA middle if lower for a neutered dog

  3. Grams a day

    602 g

    801 ÷ 1,330 kcal/kg × 1000 (Natures Menu Country Hunter 80% Chicken Nuggets)

  4. Price a day

    £3.91

    602 g × £6.49/kg; a month is 30.4 days: £119

Start with weight and activity to estimate daily calories. The example dog’s resting estimate is 534 kcal, but its daily allowance is 801 kcal: resting energy is not the feeding target.

Divide daily calories by the label’s calories per kilogram, then multiply by 1000 for grams. That gives 602 g of Natures Menu Country Hunter 80% Chicken Nuggets. Multiply the portion in kilograms by the listed price per kilogram; a month uses 30.4 days.

Daily calories become grams through the food’s calorie density, then become cost through its price per kilogram.

Brands without an open price

What can you know before the quiz?

Both brands give personalised prices after their quizzes. The estimated portions are 206 g of Pure Pet Food Chicken before adding water, or 616 g of Butternut Box Chicken. Butternut’s estimate uses its published recipe-average calories, not a chicken-specific figure.

Butternut Box advertised “Fresh meals from: £2.34 / day” on its website on 21 October 2026. That is the brand’s starting figure, not a quote for this dog. See the Butternut Box price explanation.

A calculated portion does not turn a brand’s advertised starting price into your dog’s daily cost.

By weight

How do weight and activity change calories?

Activity matters alongside weight. FEDIAF’s table gives a 15 kg adult 724 kcal with under 1 h of activity a day, compared with 953 kcal for 1–3 h of active exercise.

These rows are starting points for healthy adults, not fixed portions. Choose the activity description that fits your dog, then use the chosen food’s label calories to calculate grams.

Weight alone cannot set the portion; activity and calorie density also matter.

Questions

Short answers

How much raw food should I feed my dog?

For the example 15 kg neutered, moderately active adult, the estimate is 602 g of Natures Menu Country Hunter 80% Chicken Nuggets a day. Another recipe needs a different portion because its calorie density differs.

Does a raw feeding calculator use 2–3%?

Some raw brands use that body-weight rule. This calculator uses estimated calorie needs and label calories, so its gram result can be higher or lower.

How does a dog calorie calculator work?

It estimates energy needs from weight, activity and neutering using FEDIAF, AAHA and WSAVA formulas. The result is a starting point: weigh your dog monthly and adjust.

Can I use the adult dog food calculator for a puppy?

Puppies need a growth calculation using expected adult weight, rather than the adult activity table. Use the puppy calculator; for large-breed puppies, ask your vet.
