As the puppy grows
How do calories change as puppies grow?
For a puppy expected to reach 22 kg, the FEDIAF curve rises from 690 kcal at 4.4 kg to 1,255 kcal at 17.6 kg. Daily calories rise, but not in direct proportion to body weight.
Expected adult weight matters because this puppy formula accounts for how far the dog has progressed towards its adult size.
Use current weight and expected adult weight, rather than scaling portions directly with body weight.

The arithmetic, step by step
- Metabolic weight
- 7 kg0.75 = 4.30
- FEDIAF puppy formula
- [254.1 − 135 × (7 ÷ 22)] × 4.30 = 909 kcal
- AAHA check
- RER 301 × 2.0 = 602 kcal
- Grams
- 909 ÷ 1,330 kcal/kg × 1000 = 683 g of Natures Menu
- Price
- 683 g × £6.49/kg = £4.44 a day; × 30.4 = £135 a month
Puppy or adult, same weight
Why not use an adult feeding guide?
The 7 kg puppy estimate is 909 kcal a day, compared with 452 kcal for a neutered adult of the same weight. Growth changes the calculation even when the scales show the same weight.
An adult calorie target is therefore not a substitute for a puppy calculation.
The example puppy needs about twice the calories of the same-weight adult.

AAHA factors
Why do calorie calculators give different answers?
AAHA applies age-based growth factors to resting energy. For the 7 kg example, its estimate is 904 kcal under 4 months and 602 kcal from 4 months onwards.
FEDIAF instead uses expected adult weight in its puppy formula. These different approaches explain the range; neither figure is an exact feeding prescription. The calculation method explains how calories become grams.
The age boundary changes the AAHA estimate; it does not make a puppy’s needs change abruptly.
| Age | Factor | kcal a day, 4-month puppy, 7 kg |
|---|---|---|
| Under 4 months | 3.0 | 904 |
| 4 months and older | 2.0 | 602 |
Which recipes
Which raw recipes are labelled for puppies?
Mersey Raw Chicken mince and Paleo Ridge Classic Chicken are labelled for all life stages. Bella + Duke lists Complete Raw Adult, Chicken for adult maintenance, not growing puppies.
The table’s portions do not match 909 kcal. That target needs 683 g of Natures Menu Country Hunter 80% Chicken Nuggets: £4.44 a day at Natures Menu’s one-time price on 21 October 2026.
Calorie arithmetic does not confirm that a recipe suits puppies.

Percent rules
Can puppies use the adult percentage rule?
The adult 2–3% body-weight rule is a raw-brand feeding guide, not a veterinary norm or a puppy calculation.
Mersey Raw says puppies should receive approximately 5–8% of their ideal body weight daily. That is its brand guidance, not an equivalent of the calorie estimate: grams also depend on the recipe’s calorie density.
Keep percentage guidance separate from calorie-based portions.

Large breeds
ask your vet about growth food
Ask your vet about feeding your puppy, especially a large-breed puppy. Start with an expected adult weight based on breed or your vet’s estimate, then recalculate as current weight changes.
FEDIAF describes its figures as starting points. Weigh your puppy monthly and adjust portions with your vet’s guidance rather than treating the first result as a fixed allowance.
Recalculate through growth and ask your vet about suitable growth food.

Questions
Short answers
How much raw food should I feed my puppy?
The example 4-month puppy weighing 7 kg, with an expected adult weight of 22 kg, has a FEDIAF estimate of 909 kcal a day. Convert calories to grams using the chosen recipe’s label, and ask your vet whether that food suits your puppy.
What does a puppy feeding calculator need?
The FEDIAF puppy calculation needs current weight and expected adult weight. AAHA uses current weight and an age-based growth factor; recipe calories are then needed to calculate grams a day.
How much raw food should a puppy eat by percentage?
Mersey Raw prints approximately 5–8% of ideal body weight daily for puppies. This is brand guidance, not a universal calorie target, and the adult 2–3% rule should not be used for puppies.
Can I feed an adult raw recipe to a puppy?
Check the recipe’s stated life stage and ask your vet. Bella + Duke Complete Raw Adult, Chicken is listed for adult maintenance, not growing puppies; a calculated portion does not change that restriction.
