Ranked on one dog

Which alternatives cost less per day?

At one-time prices on the Mersey Raw and Lily’s Kitchen websites on 21 October 2026, the table runs from Mersey Raw’s £1.71–2.56 to Lily’s Kitchen’s £11.22 a day.

Both are chicken recipes, but they are not equivalent comparisons. Mersey Raw is raw, with portions based on body weight rather than calories. Lily’s Kitchen is cooked, with portions calculated from its published calories. The lower raw-food rows need that distinction.

Natures Menu is the lowest-priced row with both an open price and published calories.

Price per day

Why are the daily prices so different?

The chart holds the dog’s energy estimate at 801 kcal a day. Natures Menu lists 133 kcal per 100 g; Lily’s Kitchen lists 94 kcal per 100 g. The less calorie-dense food needs a larger portion before price per kilogram enters the calculation.

The price basis also matters: Bella + Duke uses a Pets at Home shelf price, while the other chart entries use one-time prices from the brands’ websites. These are not subscription quotes.

Compare calories, portion size and purchase type—not just the price of a pack.

What can you know before the quiz?

Pure Pet Food and Butternut Box give personalised prices after their quizzes. Estimated portions for this dog are 206 g of Pure’s dry food before adding water, or 616 g of Butternut Box using its published average calories across recipes.

Butternut Box’s website advertised “Fresh meals from: £2.34 / day” on 21 October 2026. That is the brand’s starting figure, not a quote for this dog. Its price depends on food quantity, delivery frequency and recipes; the Butternut Box cost guide explains those variables.

A published starting price cannot replace a quote for your dog.

Calories or 2–3%

Is the body-weight rule comparable?

For the same 15 kg adult, Natures Menu works out at 602 g by calories, against 300–450 g using the raw brands’ 2–3% body-weight rule. Those portions do not supply the same energy.

The rule is brand feeding guidance, not a veterinary norm. Mersey Raw, Honey’s, Naturaw and Paleo Ridge therefore sit apart from the calorie-based comparison. See raw dog food prices for that distinction.

A lower cost calculated from body weight does not establish a lower cost for the same calories.

Calories versus the 2–3% rule: Natures Menu Country Hunter 80% Chicken Nuggets (1,330 kcal/kg)
DogBy caloriesBy 2–3% of body weight
5 kg adult239 g100–150 g
15 kg adult602 g300–450 g
30 kg working dog1,566 g600–900 g

The rule is what raw brands print; it is not a veterinary norm. Small dogs need more food per pound than the rule gives, large active dogs less or more depending on calories.

First-box offers

Which discounts continue after the first box?

Pure Pet Food’s Awin-listed offer gives 30% off the first box and 10% off the second. Lily’s Kitchen’s Awin listing gives 25% off the first order. These introductory reductions are separate from the ongoing daily-price comparison.

Natures Menu says subscribers save 10% on every order, so that is an ongoing subscription reduction. Bella + Duke’s introductory offer also steps down across early boxes; it should not be applied to the Pets at Home shelf price.

Keep introductory offers separate from recurring subscription savings and store prices.

How the list is made

How is the comparison calculated?

  1. One dog

    15 kg adult, 801 kcal a day

  2. Label calories

kcal per kg as printed by each brand

  3. Open prices

listed prices with date, 21 October 2026

  4. Same order

price per day, low to high

The ranking uses a 15 kg adult at an estimated 801 kcal a day, with a 747–854 kcal range between FEDIAF, AAHA and WSAVA methods, then converts label calories and open prices into grams and cost per day using the calculation method.

These are starting points: ask your vet about your dog’s needs, weigh your dog monthly and adjust the amount as needed.

Use the same dog and calorie target when comparing foods.

Questions

Short answers

What is the cheapest Butternut Box alternative here?

Natures Menu is the lowest-priced calorie-based option for the comparison dog. Some raw-food rows show lower costs, but use body-weight portions rather than equivalent calories.

Is Pure Pet Food cheaper than Butternut Box?

That cannot be established from their open pages: both give personalised prices after a quiz. Pure’s smaller dry portion does not by itself mean a lower daily cost.

Which cooked alternative has an open price?

Lily’s Kitchen Fresh Recipes Chicken with Quinoa has an open one-time price and published calories. It is the highest-priced calorie-based option in this comparison.
